Why Is My Sump Pump Running but Not Removing Water?

Your sump pump is designed to move water out of its basin and discharge it away from your property. If the motor is running but the water level is not dropping, something may be preventing the system from working correctly.

This problem should be addressed quickly during heavy rain, snowmelt, or any period when water is entering the sump basin.

The Pump May Be Air Locked
Air can sometimes become trapped in the pump or discharge system. The motor may continue running even though the pump is unable to move water properly.

The correct venting and installation requirements depend on the pump. A plumber can inspect the system and determine whether trapped air is interfering with its operation.

The Intake or Discharge Line May Be Blocked
Dirt, gravel, sediment, and other debris can collect inside the sump basin. This material may restrict the intake or interfere with the pump’s internal components.

The discharge line can also become blocked by debris, ice, or damaged piping. Because the pump cannot move water through an obstructed line, the motor may continue running without lowering the water level.

The Check Valve May Be Failing
A check valve helps prevent discharged water from flowing back into the sump basin. If the valve is stuck, blocked, or damaged, water may return after each pumping cycle.

Air locks, restricted impellers, blocked discharge pipes, and check valve problems are all recognized causes of a pump running without delivering enough water.

The Pump May Be Worn Out
A sump pump can still make noise when its internal components are no longer working properly. Damage to the motor or impeller may prevent the unit from moving enough water.

A plumber can evaluate the equipment and determine whether it can be repaired or should be replaced.
