What Do Different Water Heater Noises Mean?
Water heaters naturally produce some sound while operating. However, a new, loud, or persistent noise may indicate sediment buildup, restricted water flow, condensation, or another plumbing problem.
The possible cause depends on the type of water heater, the sound being produced, and whether other symptoms are present.
Popping or Rumbling
Popping and rumbling noises are commonly associated with sediment collecting at the bottom of a tank-style water heater. Water trapped around the buildup may create noise as it heats and moves through the sediment.
The unit may need professional maintenance, especially if the sound continues or the amount of available hot water has changed.
Hissing or Sizzling
A hissing or sizzling noise may occur when water or condensation reaches a hot surface. On some electric units, it may also involve buildup around a heating element.
Check the area around the water heater for visible moisture. Water near the tank, connections, or surrounding floor should be inspected promptly.
Ticking, Tapping, or Banging
Pipes and metal components can expand and contract as water temperatures change. This movement may produce occasional ticking or tapping sounds.
Banging that occurs when a faucet or appliance shuts off may be caused by a water hammer. The sound may seem to come from the water heater even when the issue involves nearby piping, valves, or water pressure.
When Should You Call a Plumber?
Schedule an inspection when unusual noises occur with leaking water, visible corrosion, inconsistent temperatures, reduced hot water, rust-colored water, or electrical problems.
If you smell or hear gas leaking, leave the home immediately and contact local gas authorities from outside. Do not operate lights, phones, or other electronics before leaving.
