Why Is My Water Heater Leaking?
Water collecting around a water heater should be investigated promptly. The moisture may come from a pipe connection, valve, condensation, or the tank itself.
The source matters because some water heater leaks can be repaired, while damage to the tank may require the unit to be replaced.
Check the Connections Above the Tank
Water can travel down the outside of the unit and collect near the bottom, making the tank appear to be leaking.
Loose or deteriorated connections along the incoming cold-water line or outgoing hot-water line may produce a slow drip. A plumber can inspect the fittings and determine whether they need to be tightened or replaced.
The Drain Valve May Be Leaking
Tank-style water heaters have a drain valve near the bottom that is used during maintenance. A loose, damaged, or failing valve can allow water to drip onto the floor.
Do not assume that every puddle near the bottom means the tank has failed. The exact source should be located before deciding whether to repair or replace the unit.
The Relief Valve Requires Professional Attention
The temperature and pressure relief valve is an important safety component. Water from this area may be associated with the valve itself, excessive pressure, temperature concerns, or thermal expansion.
Do not plug, cap, or disable a relief valve. Have the system evaluated by a qualified professional.
A Damaged Tank May Need Replacement
Corrosion can eventually cause the tank itself to leak. Unlike a loose connection or replaceable valve, a leaking tank generally cannot be repaired safely and usually requires replacement.
Avoid touching electrical equipment while standing in water. If a significant leak is occurring, contact a plumber as soon as possible.
