Washing Machine Drain Overflowing? | American Rooter

Why Is My Washing Machine Drain Overflowing?

A washing machine releases a large amount of water during its drain cycle. If the laundry drain cannot handle that flow, water may rise out of the standpipe or utility sink and spill onto the floor.

The problem may involve the appliance, the drain hose, or the plumbing system. Identifying when the overflow occurs can help narrow down the source.

The Laundry Drain May Be Clogged

Lint, detergent residue, dirt, and other debris can gradually collect inside the laundry drain. Water may continue moving through a partial blockage during normal use, but the volume released by a washing machine can cause the pipe to overflow.

You may also notice slow drainage from a nearby utility sink, gurgling sounds, or water rising in another fixture.

The Drain Hose May Be Improperly Positioned

A washing machine drain hose must be installed according to the appliance manufacturer’s instructions. A kinked or clogged hose can prevent the washer from draining correctly. Pushing the hose too far into the standpipe can also restrict airflow and contribute to drainage problems or flooding.

Avoid taping or sealing the drain hose tightly inside the standpipe. The exact installation requirements vary by washer model.

The Problem May Be Farther Down the Line

If the standpipe appears clear but water continues to overflow, the blockage may be located deeper in the drainage system. A plumber may recommend professional drain cleaning or a sewer camera inspection to determine where the water is being restricted.

Repeated overflows should not be ignored. Water can damage flooring, drywall, nearby appliances, and other materials.
