Why Does My Toilet Keep Running?

A toilet should stop filling shortly after each flush. If you continue to hear water moving inside the tank, a worn or incorrectly adjusted part may be allowing water to flow into the bowl.

A running toilet may seem like a minor inconvenience, but it can waste a significant amount of water when the problem continues. Worn toilet flappers are one of the most common causes of toilet leaks.

The Flapper May Not Be Sealing
The flapper sits over the opening between the tank and bowl. When you flush, it lifts to release water and should then close tightly.

Mineral buildup, deterioration, or an incorrect fit can prevent the flapper from creating a complete seal. Water will continue passing into the bowl, causing the tank to refill repeatedly.

The Fill Valve or Float May Need Attention
The fill valve controls the water entering the tank after a flush. A worn valve may continue running or fail to shut off at the correct level.

The float tells the valve when the tank is full. If it is incorrectly positioned or unable to move freely, the water may rise too high and enter the overflow tube. Adjusting one part may solve the issue, but older or damaged components may require replacement.

Check for a Silent Toilet Leak
Some toilet leaks are difficult to hear. To check for one, place a few drops of food coloring in the tank without flushing. If color appears in the bowl within about 10 minutes, water is leaking from the tank into the bowl.

A professional inspection can determine whether the toilet needs an adjustment, a replacement part, or a more extensive repair.
